Trend Micro's research team has uncovered a concerning UPS shipping scam that is currently underway. Scammers have been meticulously impersonating the reputable courier service, UPS, in an attempt to deceive customers into divulging sensitive personal information. These fraudsters contact individuals, posing as representatives from UPS, and cunningly request details such as names, addresses, phone numbers, and credit card information under the guise of rescheduling their parcels. The scam has been particularly prevalent in several states, primarily targeting residents of Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and California. Among the various UPS shipping scams that have emerged, a recent variant attempts to manipulate recipients into believing they have missed a vital package delivery, subsequently coercing them into paying a fee to reschedule the delivery. An unmistakable red flag that this operation is a scam arises when victims are instructed to make payments through a third-party portal that is entirely unrelated to UPS. Alarmingly, scammers have even been known to demand payment using unconventional methods, such as gift cards, further highlighting the devious nature of this fraudulent scheme.
