TSA Imposes New Fine Regulations

Airplane Passengers Seated And Masked

On September 10, 2021, the Department of Homeland Security’s Transportation Security Administration increased penalties for those who do not wear masks while flying or taking public transportation. The first offense will now carry a fine of $500 to $1,000 and the second offense could cost $1,000 to $3,000. These fines will apply to offenders at airports, commercial aircraft, railroads, intercity buses, and other public transportation. The federal mask mandate for transportation has recently been extended until January 18, 2022.

David Pekoske, the TSA administrator, said, “We appreciate the majority of travelers each day who voluntarily follow the requirement, but find this action necessary to maximize the protections for those who use and work within the transportation system, and to contain COVID-19. By doubling the range of penalties, we seek to reinforce the importance of voluntary adherence.”

The Federal Aviation Administration has also noted a growing number of issues caused by individuals who are unruly and unsafe while at the airport or aboard an aircraft.
